Last week I was in Aarhus teaching an introductory course in artistic drawing for prospective academy and design students at Aarhus Kunstskole.
This is an experimental method I have developed that is focused on isolating the self and it requires the students to voluntarily undergo an altered, highly concentrated state of consciousness - different to that we exist in during our daily doings - through mark making while blind folded for a period of 2 hours as Velvet Underground’s instrumental recording ‘Symphony of Sound’ reverberates through the studio.
The purpose of this exercise is to mentally focus on the link between the mind and the hand. Neurologically speaking, this I believe to be one of the primary and necessary steps that must be taken in order to strengthen, or rather become self-aware of, the hands ability to communicate the mind. It is from here that we can begin to refine this private, internal language into one that others will be able to comprehend.
Featured are a collection of both portraits of the students and their marks from this semester, as well as past participators in this exercise.
